The polar bear on the island? Actually a feral enraged Skipper. Go back and watch, it’s there.

While today’s connection might be hard for some to make, to me this comic sprung in part out of being sick of everything being based off of or remade from something else these days. There are of course notable exceptions (I watched Drive recently and loved it, in part because of this), there has been a pretty deep roster of “reimaginings” lately. Battleship? Come on. That didn’t even seem like they were trying all that hard.

What will we do when we run out of movies to remake? Or songs to sample in our latest club jam, as the kids call them? I’ll tell you what: the real creatives, the folks who are here to not just imitate, but innovate, are gonna come crawling out of obscurity and get the recognition they deserve. Films with complex and interesting characters. Music with new sounds and creative lyrics. Art that isn’t just someone putting a single dot on a vast white canvas and claiming it has deeper meaning.

And only the occasional cameo from lovable, bucket-hat-wearing goofballs.
